What car insurance covers
These coverages make up most car insurance policies. Here's what each one does when something goes wrong.
Liability
If you cause an accident, this pays for the other person's injuries and repairs, up to your limit.
Collision and comprehensive
Collision pays to fix your own car after a crash. Comprehensive covers what isn't a crash: theft, weather, fire or hitting a deer. If you finance or lease, your lender will usually require both.
Uninsured motorist
If the driver who hits you has no insurance, or not enough, this covers you in their place.
Personal injury protection
Pays medical bills for you and your passengers after an accident, no matter who caused it. Required in some states.
These are general descriptions. Your policy sets exactly what's covered.
Understanding your coverage levels
Your coverage level is the most your policy will pay if you cause an accident. Costs above that can come out of your own pocket, which is why the cheapest option isn't always the right one. We won't push you toward a level. We'll show you what each one does, and you choose.
Coverage levels
Basic
Your state's legal minimum. The lowest price and the least protection.
Fair
A step above the minimum, with more room if an accident is serious.
Good
Mid-range limits that give more protection for your income and savings.
Great
High limits, with more protection for a home, savings or other assets.
Excellent
The highest limits we offer.

Most car insurance renews every six months, and the price can change each time. When yours comes up, we check it against our other carriers and show you if there's a better price for the same coverage.
