GLOSSARY
Underwriting is how an insurer decides whether to accept you, at what premium, and with which limits or conditions. They look at the risk, the application, driving or loss history, and their own guidelines.
A quote can still change after underwriting verifies records. Coverage is not final until the carrier accepts the risk and a licensed agent binds the policy.
EXAMPLE
A clean record might bind at the quoted price. A recent at-fault crash, or a car the carrier will not write, can mean a higher premium, extra conditions, or a decline.
Underwriting is why two neighbors can see different prices for the same coverage. It is also why a “too good” online number sometimes does not stick.
Answer applications honestly. A mistake or omission can unwind a policy later. An agent helps you complete what the carrier actually needs.
FAQ
Minutes when the file is clean, or longer if the carrier needs extra documents, photos, or a driving record. Your agent will tell you what is outstanding.
If underwriting cannot accept the risk, the carrier can decline or cancel under the policy and state rules. Premium handling depends on how far the process got. You would be notified.
Ask which factor moved. Sometimes a deductible, a coverage tweak, or another carrier is a better fit. An agent can shop that without starting from zero.
